John said 'Fate' (and today's challenge)

We went to the end of the canal today, down to Froghall and back.  The canal passes through the valley with woods along most of it, passing old limekilns along the way.  It is very narrow in places and some of the bridges are difficult due to the angles but its lovely.  John saw a grass snake sunning itself on a uprooted tree stump, but unfortunately could not get to the camera in time.  We passed one boat in the 4.5 miles to Froghall and a couple on the way back.  We didn't go through the very low tunnel although we had been told we would fit we were not convinced as the guides at the last lock hit well below the cratch and light and we didn't want to have to take the ladder off the roof as we were not staying at Froghall.  The basin is really nice and very peaceful but only two boats were moored in it.

We had a good cruise back and were unsure of where we were going to moor then as John says 'fate' intervened, just as we were passing through the bridge at the side of the Holly Bush pub we got something around the prop so we had to pull up, the problem we discovered was a piece of large thick black plastic, could have been a bale bag, soon removed, so now we have pulled up we might as well stay!

Its a bit narrow!

Today's challenge,
anyone any ideas as to what this is?

  1. I think the last three pictures show a means of getting horses out of the cut. It is very narrow at this location, with stone sides. John.

  2. Hi both - glad to see that you are enjoying the Caldon. Re The Holly Bush - did we ever tell you that we stayed in the holiday cottage next door to the pub for a week back in 2004 when we couldn't get that week on our share boat - we had several good meals in there! xxx
